Honnavar was once, truly a city of gold. It was a prosperous town with pleny of European gold coming in from its exports of spices and chemicals. Queen Channabhaira Devi who ruled over it and kept the Portuguese at bay, built great waterways and canals from the river Sharavathi.
The municipal office is housed in a colonial building.
Mangrove line the sides of the river, which are home to many different birds, as well as crocodiles.
The river joins the sea at Honnavar. Tiny white flowers of aquatic plants dot the canals.
